According to Business Wire, the beauty industry is constantly growing market and it has great potentials as “the global market is projected to reach $675 billion by 2020 and is expected to grow at the rate of 6.4%.” The reason why I choose the beauty industry for my project is not only because it is a huge market but also because I love makeup. I love doing makeup, watching makeup tutorials, buying make-up - basically, I love all things make-up related - including skincare (yes, they’re related!). As a makeup lover since 8th grade, I have witnessed major changes in the beauty community due to the ways it responded to the proliferation of social media - especially Instagram and YouTube. One of which being the rise of beauty influencers.
Before the beauty community became tightly tied to social media, there was not a lot of focus on the beauty industry. Yes, there were some big brands that we usually saw being advertised on TV or in real life (examples being affordable brands like Maybelline and L’Oreal or higher-end brands like Chanel and Dior) but that was about it. Makeup Artists were not widely known as they were the people behind the scene. We did not know or care too much about their names or what they looked like, we only knew that they made the celebrities look good on red carpets or on TV. Sometimes, we got to know about what products they used on the celebrities thanks to articles that “reveals the magic of makeup” like this article on the right. Because of that, there was also a big difference between professional makeup artists and normal people because there were not a lot of places for you to learn how to do makeup. Beauty schools and articles like that were all you had. |
